Little update on my whale sculpture, added the second whale and made plants from the leftover shavings, sorry if you have already seen this in any other subs!
Spent the afternoon in the shop. Getting closer to oil time
Hands are throbbing... what’s the secret?
Trying to make a sphere. It hasn’t been super easy.
Any advice for first timer?

Any advice for first timer?

Hello all,

I recently came across a sapling that had been cut down in a park. It's about the perfect height and width to use as a walking stick but I'm unsure about prepping the wood.

I know I should remove the bark so it can dry properly but I'm curious on how to keep it from cracking. As well, as far as carving the wood itself, any recommendations on some basic tools to start with?
