My second carved spoon, really getting into it and given away as a present. Ash wood + beeswax :)

My very first carving, pretty happy with how it turned out in the end. Its an ashtray to keep my friends from ashing their joints onto my deck :)

Been out of it for a while since my mentor retired and closed the shop. But I figured I would post where I left off with a pair of Philedelphia side chairs I was working on before the pandemic hit.

Newbie here. The reddish brown was my very first try, white one was second. I'll continue to make spoons for now. Took me hours to make one, also blisters and small cut wounds.

    Drying out Cedar

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 08:33 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Quick question. I just bought a 2x6x12 cedar board from Home Depot and I want to laminate it into a couple 6x6 12" tall to carve some gargoyles. The wood feels a bit damp and and I was wondering if I need to dry it out and for how long. I am worried about it splitting as it drys out. I was thinking to dry it in the sun for a couple of weeks.

No I don't have a moisture meter so I don't know the exact moisture level.

    Thanks for your help.

Quick question.. is craigslist the best place to try to sell green wood? This massive Cherry in my back yard is coming down soon and was wondering if its worth trying to sell?

tree of life carving i'm working on

Hand-carved pipe from a stick and part of an old rotten fence post, drilled holes in sections of the stick and made smaller dowels (also with holes) to wedge them together with some glue. Functions perfectly for whatever you want to smoke, but I’ve yet to buy and install a filter

My first project, a carved and painted sign with a quote from Dante. Not perfect but I’m happy with it!

Beginner interested in Flexcut carving knife's

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 07:02 PM PDT

Hi I would like to get into wood carving which I never have done before but would like some good tools to last me and to make my lifea bit easier, not waste my time on bad tools.

I have found a website called fine-tools.com and found some Flexcut carving knife's

I like the Flexcut Interchangeable Tool Sets:

    https://www.fine-tools.com/flexcut-interchangeable.html

What set would be the best, the 5 pc. Craft Carver Set or the 11 pc. Craft Carver Set?

And I found these as they sound good https://www.fine-tools.com/flexcut.html

What type of knifes do I need for fine work? they have Skew Knife, Cutting Knife, Detail Knife, Etc.

I also need a knife sharpening tool but they have so much but i'm lost at that, what do I need to look at?

The work i'm hoping to do is this (hopefully): https://i.etsystatic.com/7838109/r/il/c3dd00/1745319128/il_794xN.1745319128_45ri.jpg

But I need a versatile set to do all sorts but nothing big, all at a smaller scale.

I was also interested in getting a Dremel 4000, is this also a good option?

Hope I make sense its late as I'm from the UK ;)

    Best wood carving magazine subscription?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 11:48 AM PDT

Does anyone have any recommendations for any good woodcarving magazine or magazines I could subscribe to? Due to the lockdown, I haven't gone to any bookstores to see what is available.
