Wood carving Oak moth in flight. It's an improvised carving so no claims for accuracy to real moth anatomy! I experimented with a diagonal grain position, which made the carving challenging but I like the final effect. Waxed and buffed.

A friend got me some BC Fir wood so I thought... It's quite soft and light so why not try to make a carved/realistic lures. So here you go. First time carving a detailed lure and my third time using a hairbrush paint gun. "Top water rainbow trout"

Any tips on finishing this? Would like to stain the J and C the same with the A a lighter color, leave the back natural. Is a tiny brush and lots of patients my only option?

How to improve this very simple chess king?

These are the pictures. Very rough, I know, but it is also my first woodcarving. Used olive wood.

I am currently at a loss - I don't know how to go on from here, if I should add something, or if I should leave it. I only have a pocket knife to work with. Also, if someone knows the magic to carving inside the top (inside the "crown"), I would really appreciate it! I have a small pyrography set, but am really unexperienced in its use, but I guess this could be an option - although I'd rather not, because it is a gift and not something for myself that I can damage.

Any kind of suggestion would be very much appreciated!

Btw, this is a gift for a chess loving friend.
