I've been whittling for a little under a year. I don't have a whole lot of freetime because I'm a full-time college student, but I really want to improve. Whittling is one of the only things I actually enjoy. I spend almost all of my freetime carving. I want to start using harder woods than I have in the past in order to accomplish more detailed pieces. However, my knives really suck because I bought the cheapest ones I could find to get started because I wasn't sure how far I would want to go. All that to say, does anyone have suggestions for a set or brand of higher quality knives, chisels, and gouges for someone who is not super advanced but wants to progress? I'm really struggling to find what I'm looking for.

I'm learning Woodcarving and could use advice!

    Hello everyone!

I've done some carpentry lessons and work, and My next step is to learn wood carving to broaden my abilities and build cross discipline skills. I have classes on Udemy for wood carving.

What I'd like advice on - I've been told Basswood is the "target" wood for learning carving. But I do not have access to Basswood easily. Here is my local supplier's site - http://countrywoods.co.za/Wood-Species.asp - I'm wondering if the more experienced members here could take a look at their species list and let me know which to go for as a beginner woodcarver.

    Thank you in advance!
