    Tips for drying greenwood projects.

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 10:43 PM PST

I make wooden Ocarinas and I usually use cured hardwoods. I split the piece, carve the inside out with gouges, glue back together and put holes in. I've been wanting to start carving more greenwoods mainly to save my poor hands from exhaustion of carving seasoned madrone. My only concern is cracking while the wood dries. I understand sealing the ends helps but will that help after I have hollowed out the branch and glued it back together.

I have lost a few beautiful pieces to huge cracks that completely ruined their playability. I have been considering building a lightbulb kiln for the purpose of drying out my projects but wanted to see if anyone on the sub has any other advice?

    Thanks!

Looking for good tools and where to buy them

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 06:43 PM PST

    Hey!

I'm a beginner and I'm looking to slowly carve a whole chess set. I have soft wood for carving pieces but I don't have any tools yet. Any recommendations for good tools and where to get them?

    Wood for molding carving?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:31 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm building a large snake enclosure for my Burmese python and I'd like to line it in molding with snake designs carved along the molding.

The length of the enclosure will be roughly 8-10 feet long, so I need a sizeable stretch of wood. I can only find 12" long pieces of basswood on Amazon.

What type of wood and length/height/depth would you recommend for this, and where should I buy?

Can I carve spoons with regular woodworking chisels and a mallet?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:20 PM PST

I won't be able to get any woodcarving tools until maybe next year when I'm back in the states, so was wondering if I could "chisel" them out?
