Increase moisture content of dry wood to make carving easier? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:39 PM PDT I'm a beginner and started carving with chisels about a year ago, making a few small things using Eucalyptus regnans blanks I ordered online. This is a dense hardwood but I didn't find it too difficult to carve in the first few months. We had summer in Australia and although they were advertised as 'kiln dried' the remaining blanks have noticeably twisted as they dried further. I've improved my chisel sharpening skills but the wood is now tearing more and harder to carve than it was. Can this be reversed by wetting or soaking in oil? [link] [comments] | ||
Does charring the wood to bring out the grain work well with butternut? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:47 AM PDT Saw a youtube video of someone using a blowtorch to bring out the grain in wood and I'm wondering if it would work with this figure I'm carving out of butternut. I don't know if it works equally well with all kinds of wood. I think basically you char the wood black then sand it with fairly fine sandpaper, steel wool it, and wax it. (Open to corrections if that's totally wrong, or links to internet instructions.) Thanks! [link] [comments] |
