My first true commission. Handcarved black walnut. Fun piece of wood to work with. First time I've ever had to deal with the pith. Had me worried, but came out okay.

    carving crabapple

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 03:52 PM PDT

I have a lot of crabapple wood from the 2020 derecho that hit Iowa. See the picture below of a plant stand/end table I made with crabapple. I love the reddish and purple (in some light) shades of this wood. However, the wood is very hard to cut with a saw. Has anybody experience with carving this wood for small figures, such as chess pieces? Thanks.

    Making Natural Wood Stain

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:31 PM PDT

I want to stain a piece that I carved a while ago, and want to create my own unique stain. My idea would be to use pigment gathered from mushrooms to stain the wood (red), jut not sure how to go about it. Any help would be extremely appreciated.
