It's been a minute, 20 years since my last carving.

Anyone here make a living from carving?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2021 07:55 PM PST

Been carving for ~7-8 years, prior to lock downs and restrictions I was doing fairly well at the shows I attended. By that I mean selling between 60-80% of my products and engaging with lots of interested customers and fellow artists. I recently wrapped up my first show/sale in two years, and suffice to say the results were abysmal. The 40% commission taken by galleries and retail has never been easy to swallow, and I often have to settle for less than half of the minimum wage, or leave with an empty wallet and arms full of work.

I make functional kitchenware, and hand carved bowls and serving trays, amongst other useable wooden items. I spend upwards of 20 hrs on a single piece of service wear, and I am at the point where I can no longer support myself financially and may have to start parting out my carving tools as I've invested all that I could into them.

Sorry to be negative, but after arriving at the show with 167 pieces, and leaving with with 164, I'm feeling a little defeated. The real kicker though, the three pieces that sold were little tree ornaments made from a little 1x2 scrap piece of cedar.

    Questions from an beginner

    Posted: 11 Dec 2021 02:09 PM PST

Is there a preferred beginner's tool set/ brand or place to get them from? Ive looked around on Amazon a little but sometimes you cant rely on those. Also any recommendations on resources such as videos/articles on getting started?

Where do you all find your carving stock?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 12:42 PM PST

I'm looking for some nice thick pieces of wood in a couple different species, preferably in squares, thinking along the lines of 18"x18"x3-4", as I'd like to carve a nice big green man out of a solid chunk of wood (probably gonna do a couple practices first, in basswood or something, but would like the final to be in butternut), but I've checked a few websites and it seems difficult to find pieces in such large dimensions. There are a couple shops local to me that carry some really interesting species, but it's almost all in boards that are at most 1.5" thick for more construction-like purposes. Either way, I've got a while to work on it, I probably won't get really started on this for a while as I'm gonna moving in a little while to a house where I'll be able to do up my garage for some carving work, but would appreciate any leads or tips you have, especially if you know a few places that specialize in just carving stock. Thanks!

What one book on woodcarving has helped you the most?

Hello. I’m new to this craft and I have been having a hell of a time finding tools.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 03:54 PM PST

Amazon is the only place I have been able to find tools. I would like to look find a place to get quality tools that I can trust… sometimes Amazon sends things that are not like what is described. Any tips? Thanks a ton!

Pulled some driftwood from the Chesapeake about 2 months back. The amount of googling I've done looking for someone to potentially work it into a feasible prop warhammer is wild lol Could someone point me in the right direction? It's currently about 4.5ft long and approximately 45lbs.
