    desktop/workbench dust collection advice

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 07:28 PM PST

    Hi all,

I've been doing some research into "desktop dust collection". I had the thought to come here and ask around thinking that some of you may have set ups at workbenches and the like. I can say I'm a carpenter by trade but in large shop. I have not done any kind of woodcarving. My needs for duct collection are a bit unique perhaps. Most of my wood based hobby projects can be done after hours at the shop. What I'm currently messing around with at home is model building. Specifically lightly carving/sanding plastic models. At by home I also mean an apartment. It's not necessarily the ideal situation therefore I might not stick with it. I also like to repair/refinish old fishing reels which can involve a bit of dust as well. In order to continue these ventures with any level of frequency I need to set up some form of dust collection at my workbench. I can vent out a window to some extent but the plastics in particular need to be filtered. Noise is a bit of an issue. I don't want to be running a shop vac for hours a few days a week. The way my small apartment complex is set up I only have one upstairs neighbor to be concerned about but I want to be considerate. He is a hobbyist as well actually. I'm totally capable of building my own setup. Looking into different squirrel cage fans and such is a lot in of itself. Ideally I'd like to get something with a variable fan speed as well. Any suggestions, youtube videos, etc would be greatly appreciated!

TL;DR - Looking for advice on getting some workbench dust collection set up. Open to purchasing or building my own set up. The quieter the better, running a shop vac is not ideal. Ideally something with variable fan speed.

How can I start wood carving properly?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 01:57 PM PST

I want to ask some things about wood carving. First of, what kinds of knives would be good for carving (how expensive they would be? And in what kinds of places I could find them?). And second thing, what type of wood would be easy to carve and not so terribly expensive?

Thank you for answering and sorry for if this is the wrong sub for these kinds of questions :)

Finishing my first whittling projecting (advice!)

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 02:47 PM PST

Complete beginner looking for advice on how to finish a basswood whittle...

It's no masterpiece by any stretch, but I'm pretty happy with it for a first project.

Would like to make it look nice as it's a gift, but with it not being particularly smooth and hand cut, i don't know if oils or varnishes would be any good??

    All thoughts welcome!
