    Getting started.

Hey fellas, I'm just getting started into woodcarving and was wondering about some default tools people use to hand carve? I have a 1-3/4" (45mm) mastercarver and some spare wood but I can't make anything with fine detail. Is there a set I should purchase for more curved and natural woodcarving?

How to prevent cracking of a carving engraved in green wood

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:08 PM PDT

I have been recently carving wood spirits and been using green wood since it is so easy to get a hold of. I have noticed the ends of my branches/small logs have been starting to crack and I'm afraid it will start happening to my engraved carvings. Is there anyway to prevent this or will the engraved part usually be fine from cracking? Also attempting to do some research I read something about using a heat gun on the surface, I can't find the article exactly but I'm wondering if that would work too, I don't care if the ends crack I just worry about my carving and I don't want to be constantly wetting it everyday or having to put it in a garbage bag so it dries slower.

Bowl carving bench with middle pipe clamp

    Posted: 05 May 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I was watching a video of a guy who has been making bowls for 50 years and he has a lot of techniques and equipment I havent seen elsewhere.

His one workbench is the most interesting to me. Its a bowl carving bench that implements a pipe clamp. Have you seen something like this? Id like a closer look at it or something like it.

Here is the video with the timestamp. https://youtu.be/KYwsFsPIBYM?t=400

    Good beginner kit?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 11:06 AM PDT

I'm looking to get into woodcarving, it seems like a relaxing hobby, and that's just about the thing I need right now, I'm only 16 and my budget isn't very high, would be hard to afford anything above 50$.

Do you have any recommendations? my first projects are gonna be basic stuff like spoons etc..., then I will work my way up.

I'm just not sure what's considered as a good kit and what's not, I want something that will last me at least a year until I get better and can afford a better kit.

    Thanks in advance!

    Beginner

    Posted: 05 May 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Hey guys I'm new to carving, been at it for about a month and I've done all of the common beginner projects, wizard, owl, tiki head, etc. I'm having trouble finding new fun projects that fit my skill level (which is pretty low). So I was wondering if anybody has suggestions for simple yet challenging projects for a beginner. Side note, I only have my carving knives, no saw, yet...
