Posted: 17 Jun 2020 08:37 AM PDT Hi all, I purchased a couple beaver craft carving knives and I accidentally took the edge off of one of them. I have tried everything from a leather strope to a grinder to get the super sharp edge back and it just won't go back to the way it was. I spend 15 minutes using a wet stone and still nothing. Am I doing something wrong or is the knife a write off? I am sharpening at 10 degree angle. I also ordered 5 new knives all different style from beaver craft. [link] [comments]
Using woodcarving in other projects? Posted: 17 Jun 2020 10:06 AM PDT Hello! I've been woodworking for a few years and have only just started getting into woodcarving. I was wondering if any of y'all have integrated woodcarving into other projects? Thank you! [link] [comments]

Carving a mechanical 3D puzzle box to replicate a pre-fab purchase and looking for wood suggestions Posted: 16 Jun 2020 03:42 PM PDT Hi! I've been in a rut all quarantine where none of my usual hobbies seem interesting. I'm an avid jigsaw puzzle fan, but I'm just going through the motions there, too. But, I was literally just on Amazon and by random chance saw a listing for 3D wood mechanical puzzles. Okay, now this looks like an exciting, rip roaring time! I just purchased a wood 3D puzzle box (link below), and was thinking that it would be fun to try to replicate a second box from scratch as I put together the purchased one. I would just carve out copies of the pieces in a nicer wood, but follow the same instructions from the purchased box. Since I'm assuming that all of the pre-fabricated pieces will come in a thin wooden sheet that I just "pop out", I'm trying to figure out what type of wood I should use that would be thin (maybe 1/8in - 1/4in thick), but solid and would look nice with a finish. Anyone have suggestions? Sorry if this is an obvious noob question. I've only done really one basic 3D carving and some practice chip carving before. But if this works out, then I'm going to try to recreate quality version of a bunch of this kind of puzzle! Oh, there's nothing quite like the rush of a new, exciting hobby! TL;DR: What kind of wood would work best (and also look nice and solid) to build a 3D puzzle box like the one in the link below? https://www.amazon.com/UGEARS-Treasure-Mechanical-Assemble-Engineering/dp/B0777N5QPV#customerReviews [link] [comments]
