Wood carving A little practice piece on hands I did, getting ready to carve hands on a larger cowboy caricature I’m carving. This is alder wood, mostly done with pocket carver knife and small V-gouge. Nails were shaped with 1/8” #11 gouge.

In search of advice on a beginner’s set of carving tools.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 01:28 PM PDT

I'm a hobbyist woodworker, and I'm looking to develop woodcarving skills to add to my tool belt (see what I did there?!?). I bought a set of inexpensive VonHaus carving tools on Amazon, and while I knew the quality wasn't going to be top-notch, I'm not thrilled with the set as a whole.

That being said, I'm looking for a set of good quality, moderately-priced, carving tools. I'm looking at Woodcraft.com. The sets I'm seeing look nice, but there are no ratings on the website. The brands I'm considering are Shinwa, pfeil, and Ramelson. Those are not brands I've heard of (although, I am new to carving, so that's not a surprise). I'd like to spend between $65 and $150, but obviously, if I can get a good-quality set at the low end of that range, my wife would be happy.

What are your recommendations? Should I spend a little extra to get more than the basic beginner tools?

    Confusion about stropping compounds

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 06:58 PM PDT

I'm somewhere between new carver and master carver. I've heard a lot of different information on stropping compounds. I generally use the green and I also have Flexcut gold, but I don't know what the difference is. Helvie says they use white exclusively. Chipping Away says to put a basecoat of red on their power stropper. I've also heard a rule of thumb that the lighter color you go, the less abrasive, but I can't find anything to back that up. Please help!

How long should chisels and gouges last?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 01:37 PM PDT

I was told that quality chisels/gouges should last a lifetime but it seems that you would wear them out if you need to resharpen them/touch them up on every carving project? Is this right, or should you only use the strop to hone them during a project?

    Good beginner set under $50

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 01:08 PM PDT

I would like to try wood carving, but I don't want to spend a ton of money on a set of tools and find out it's not for me.

Can any of you recommend a beginner set under $50?
