    Do you finish your sculptures

Do you apply some kind of finishing to your sculptures what are arguments for and against it?
If you do what kind of finishing do you use or are there other methods to protect your sculptures?

    Need some pointers

I cant find balsam or bass wood in Iceland I can order it from abroad. But I did get some wood from my brother in-law. It has been good practicing on it but the wood really (Im not sure the terminology is correct) cracks or splinters easily. Is it no good using like commercial wood you get at a wood store? Are there better woods beisde balsa and bass or just get a branch and practive? Also if using outside branches and they are wet what do you do just wait til dry or some trick?

Im really new never done anything like this before. I put pictures as reference to what Im talking about

What type of wood is this? Third attempt at whittling. Used a chunk of firewood. It was not as soft as previous carvings.
