Question regarding working with wood that has thick growth rings. Posted: 10 Jul 2021 12:20 AM PDT I was donated some scrap wood from a remodeling project someone did a couple of towns over. The wood has oddly thick growth rings, almost as thick as the material between each ring. Wanting to get a feel for the material before doing anything bigger with it, I cut a 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" cube and started roughing in a merkaba star (8 points) as it would have me tackling the material from all angles but with simple cuts. My knife was doing an alright but not great job and felt a lot of resistance on the growth rings so decided to see how a chisel would feel. The chisel ended up needing enough pressure that when it finally got through the growth ring it instantly cut through the softer material underneath and glanced off of the next ring deflecting the chisel into my palm and up into my thumb. After the ER glued my hand back together I got to wondering just what kind of wood I was given. I really don't want to abandon this wood as the darker rings give it an almost tiger stripe appearance. Having had to leave most of my tools behind when moving about a month ago, and poor as I am, I don't have access to the proper tools to work it in a safe manner. Looking back on it the block should have been in a vice and I should have been using a proper carving knife with a better honed edge. (Just have an old pocket knife, some chisels, and some files/rasps currently.) Aside from this insight, can you guys offer any advice for working with wood like this? The rings are hard like iron, but the material between is soft like pine. Makes for an awkward cut. Any tips beyond not being an idiot after I heal (and set about trying again) would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] | ||
