And for the finish.......? I need to seal it but it needs to look decent, don't want to slap poly on it.

Handcarved Sapele. Tough wood, but not too terrible. I learned a new word working on this one: Chatoyancy. This wood has chatoyancy. Beautiful wood, very imperfect bowl.

Okay, I'm absolutely starting from scratch as a woodcarver, what are the most important things to know?

I've started carving a skull of some other non-identified wood and it seems like the wood was nearly impossible to cut, and hard and unmalleable. I see a lot of sculptures made of basswood, so I think I'll try for that or something.

I have 3 chisels I just purchased, but they're only doing a mediocre job. I have a lot of experience in art, just not as a woodsculpture whatsoever. What equipment wise am I missing yet? Can you reccomend other things?

Finished this commission and attended the wedding this weekend. Really happy with the result! Red oak, hand carved (at least 95% of it)
