Question about a mistake I may have made

    Hey folks,

I've been trying to carve a salt cellar for my wife out of a piece of black walnut log. I had sawed off the chunk for the cellar base, but ended up leaving it for a couple of weeks, and now it feels like it's gotten too hard to carve into at all. I thought maybe by oiling it with some mineral oil it might get a little softer, but feel I may have made it even worse. Any tips for potentially revitalizing in/softening it so I don't end up splitting it trying to dig into it?

Can anyone help me ID this tree? I took it down in my yard and was looking to do some carving and would just like to know what it is.
