First attempt at carving. Botched the staining a bit but happy with the overall outcome. Would love some input on how to evenly stain carved wood.

Omg first off love Reddit and I'm glad I found this sub! I've recently started carving, I have some chisels and a file, nothing too fancy bc I want to work my way up, I was wondering if anyone had any knife recommendation?? Or YouTube recs?? Any guidance would be much appreciated, thank y'all.

    Why my cherry wood cracked?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:44 AM PST

    Hello,

I have just started wood carving and first thing I want to do is a wooden mug. My tools are:

14mm and 6 mm chisel 18mm semicircle chisel Cherry wood (8cm diamameter)(which i found outside if the house)

1 step - cleaned wood crust

2 step - One day after first step wood has some cracks i don't understand why but I started scraping wood with semicircle chisel. But it was way too hard because of that I soak wood in water. After 3-4 hours later I started scraping and suddenly wood cracked from where is my chisel.

It didn't stop me, i continued and it cracked again.

My question is where did I wrong or did I have any right move?

Combined with the beavercraft C4 (cheap yet good knife but not available on Amazon) would this be all I really need to start off?
