Made these for a father and son last year for Christmas, figured I'd share. They were my second and third masks I've made. Lots of fun!

Saw a stick, peeled the bark off of it, started a bowl and a curved notch. It seemed really hard to cut into, wondering if it's just a really hard wood or maybe I'm a wimp :). Only have a cheap set of carving tools but it's fun

    Worth going to power carving?

    Worth going to power carving?

I've made a handful of wood and cork duck decoys and look forward to making more. The basswood wood heads took by far the longest of any part, and am wondering if investing in a power carving tool would be worth it for my needs.

I used a bandsaw to cut out the top and side profile and then used a rasp, carving knife and sandpaper to do the rest. How much quicker would this process be with a power carver such as a Foredom? Also I have a dremmel flex shaft I could try to use but gather that it isn't nearly as powerful as a true power carver.

    Suggestions for absolute beginners

I just got a beaver craft sloyd knife and some blocks of basswood. I'm completely new to wood carving and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for beginner pieces that I could try my hand at. Are there any websites or youtubers that you think are good resources for this?
