I showed you this egg couple days before, thinking it was done. But then i found myself with a knife and sand paper and turned out there was at least another hour of messing about with that face and here is the result (I’m adding the “before” photo as well)

I found this spalted maple sitting in my fire woodpile of all places. Cracked it like a geode. What a sick find. I cut the spalted maple into sheets and mounted on the front and back of a hickory core for added strength and stability. To the left and right of that are some cherry accents.

What are the common types of softwood?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:18 PM PST

The main problem I have come to is finding the right kind of wood. The only softwood I can reliably find from a hardware store (not many woodworking focused places around me) is cedar. Even then, from a hardware store, and especially cedar, the wood splits as it dries off. I can simply buy it online, but I mainly buy from there for higher quality projects I'm confident I won't mess up on. I'm looking for something cheap, big to allow for mistakes (2x2-4x4 columns) and soft as I don't want to put too much strain on my beginner equipment.
