Lee Valley gouge set or single gouges Posted: 01 Apr 2021 07:28 PM PDT Hi, I'm just getting started in carving, after a few years doing hand tool wood working. I want to carve spoons and bowls, but have been having trouble getting my hook knife cutting well (I love my Mora 106 though!). I used a borrowed gouge to carve out the the bowl of a spoon for the first time last week, and now I want to get one to to add to my kit. I was thinking of just getting a single one to start with. However, I see that Lee Valley has a 7-tool kit available for $90, or less than the cost of two single gouges: Money's not really an issue here, but I'm not a professional either, and I have a very small shop. I am moving away from the "get the cheapest tool I can to get started" stage of my life and into the "get a few good tools and learn to use them well" stage. Does anyone have experience with these 'cheaper' kits? Are they good value, or would you recommend assembling a smaller selection of higher-quality gouges? [link] [comments] | ||||||||
