Are turning blanks unsuitable for carving?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 04:40 PM PDT

I went to Rockler's because I'm in a town where they have a brick and mortar store. It didn't seem like they had a lot of wood specifically for carving but I bought a block of sycamore and a block of African padauk that were I think in a bin of turning blanks, though they're like 4x4x2, so they're not pen blanks...

Anyway next day I'm at a flea market elsewhere and the guy has some blanks and I ask him about it, and he says "those aren't going to be good for carving. They're stabilized." I'm new to all of this, and had never heard of stabilized wood. I gather it means all the moisture has been removed.

Upon googling, I sort of got the impression that turning blocks are generally stabilized. Is this likely to be true? Did I just buy two blocks I can't carve? I might try and take them back if so...

    Thanks for any info!
