    New Wood Carver

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 01:38 PM PST

Hi! So, I am just recently getting into wood carving. I've purchased gloves & a thumb guard, a strop some nice bass wood, a 1 3/8ths knife and a cheap gouge set.

Note that I'm working on relatively small projects to start*

My main question would be that I'd like to know what you wish you knew when you first started carving. Any usefully tips and tricks or tools you wish you had sooner?

    Side question-

I found this online. It says it can polish, carve, sand, grind, buff and drill. Would that machine/ a similar machine like that be worth while to get?

EDIT: any and all advice is appreciated

Got another big one started.. 12x12x3 black cherry. The guy wanted something even bigger, but I was able to talk some sense into him, luckily.. "Look. Unless you wanna hand over an entire paycheck to me, let's just stick with 12x3, eh?" lol.

    No clue where to start

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:02 PM PST

I am building a home bar and thought of the great idea of having the "One Ring" circular inscription from Lord of the Rings you see all over the internet carved into the center of the bar top. After reading a bit about it I'm not sure its something I'd be up to doing myself. Maybe I should see about getting it burned in instead? I also have no clue how to go about finding someone to hire to do it for me. What do ya'll think?

    Is eucalyptus wood generally food-safe?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 03:01 PM PST

Anyone know if eucalyptus is ok for making a mug or spoon, or would I be cursing myself with faint menthol flavoring?

Just had to have a tree cut down which was of some sentimental value, and saved a chunk with the idea of carving a keepsake.

    Help for a newbie

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 06:03 AM PST

Hello all, I'm looking at trying my hand at woodcarving to make my own chess pieces etc. It's always something that I've found interesting but I've never tried.

As a total beginner, what type of tools would I need? I see there's beginner kits on Amazon etc buy are they okay? I'd rather not shell out tonnes of money to begin with just incase it turns out I'm shit at it! Thanks

anyone else having problems posting to this sub?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2021 01:18 PM PST

since 20/12 it looks like my (picture) posts are not making it to the sub, whereas they do appear on /r/whittling

the posts are visible in my post history, but they do not show up in "new", "hot", "top" or anywhere... and after a few hours the thumbnail goes away too.

    anyone having this too?

    Carving wooden sculpture

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 11:12 PM PST

Hi experts in the community. I have a strong urge to create and abstract wood sculpture with smooth surface and beautiful grains. Is there any wood recommended for such a project? I want to try sculpting using a knife instead of the usual carving tools. Any opinions on this? Thanks in advance.

P.s. I have not done sculpting before.
