My knife is taking off chips and becoming hard to push through the wood. Is it time to use the stone?

I've tried stropping it again but it seems like it doesn't help. Should I just strop it more or use the stone? I only have a 400/1000 grit so should I just go to the 1000? Also, how thick should the pieces taken off be? Maybe I'm trying to remove too much wood each slice?

Put a combo stain/poly on this rocket I carved. It looked like shit, so I started sanding and... I like it way better now

Book or resource recommendations for in the round/sculptures?

I've been whittling/carving for a while with just a knife and some palm gouges and have been gifted a handful of gouges recently. I've done a few woodspirits in small half log pieces with them, and looking to do busts/sculptures now. What books or resources would you guys recommend for learning?
