Hi members of r/woodcarving! I have recently taken up the hobby and i’m looking for a source of wood. (Im in the UK). I know I can buy lime wood blanks online but they all seem poor for the price. Is it worth me looking at B&Q or shall I try and strike up a deal with a tree surgeon? Thanks!

I've restored these 3 pieces carved by somebody else decades ago. They are beautiful carvings and I am glad I was able to give them look they deserve. If interested, check out my website for the work process.

    My 2nd carving project

Did this based on Chris Pye's woodcarving course book. The ground isn't nearly as smooth as I would have liked, but I think it still works with the piece.

    Anything better than carbon paper?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2022 06:32 PM PST

I'm wondering if there is anything better than black carbon paper to transfer a sketch onto a wood block? I'm not too good at freehanding. Thanks!

    Woodblock Carving Tools

    Posted: 09 Jan 2022 12:46 PM PST

Please recommend a woodblock carving brand/tool kit. I was looking at options and see they range anywhere from $50-$250. I need something for fine details. Something that is quality and will be easy to use. Thank you!

I am really interested in making bowls and spoons. I live in the southeastern US and I have a lot of cool wood types available. My question is this: what is the best carving set I can use? I have axes/hatchets (collector) that will fit the bill for roughing blanks, but I seem to see a spoon knife vs. gouge tools thing going on on here quite a bit. What would be best? Is there a ~$50-100 "set" that would do me for spoons and bowls? Knives vs. gouges?

The wood types I am interested in WILL range to the hard types...hickory, black walnut heart, ironwood (American hornbeam), etc. There are also some woods that I don't see mentioned on here much: black cherry, chinaberry, catalpa, tree of heaven, poplar--to name a few. Anyway, with the wood types in mind, what can be recommended?
