    German tool suggestions

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Hello. I am new to wood carving. So new in fact my only attempt at carving was a morel mushroom with a pocket knife. However I am interested in putting together a nice collection of carving tools. I am an American that lives in Germany for the time being and I think itd be really neat to pick up a set of nice German made tools while I live here. Any suggestions would be helpfull. The only brand Ive stumbled uppn so far is 2 cherries.

Can I carve figures out of forest wood? What do I need to know.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:06 AM PDT

I'm interested in trying out a new artistic medium. I'd like to be able to take wood from a forest and carve it into detailed little figures like animals. Toolwise I wouldn't want to be using anything big/clunky - I like handmade stuff. Can this be done? (I think this might be called whittling? I like the smooth wood sculptures though so I don't know if that's different) but if you can't really get details or smoothness without mechanical tools I would use them.

If it can I know it will likely be more complicated than I expect. Any information or guides people know of would really help me out. I've checked out the intro in this subreddit already. I don't know the best wood to look for, how to prepare the wood, or which tools I'd need for the type of carving I want to do. I will look up guides on how to use the tools and techniques when I'm certain.

What tools do you guys use for carving?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:31 PM PDT

Noob here wanting to get into carving. I've seen several internet posts of what to use, but idk if they are really the best to use, and not just trying to sell me something. What are the best tools to get started learning with? And what is a good way to get started?

    Uses for Hackberry

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:51 PM PDT

Located in Texas. a A large hackberry blew over in a recent storm in my back yard. Other than burning it in my fire pit, what all could I use it for. Seems a bit soft and springy for handles and the like. Maybe just whittling or carving practice in general?
