I bought some Maple Burls, and I am having the hardest time actually carving into them because they are so interesting to look at. These are not enhanced images and the surfaces are flat.

Hi Im a newborn woodcarver, slowing building my collection of tools while i practice with little basswood blocks BUT I am wondering about portable powertools (to chop and size wood stumps and what have you), your favorite type of wood to carve and where can I find a mask making community? Lol all i can find are surgical mask tutorials and what not, I watch alot of Uganda Mask Carvings and am enthralled with Noh but stuck in shitty socal.

Tips for beginners / getting started?

Recently stumbled upon this sub and it really appealed to me. Went out and got myself one of these:

https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B089SRXXKJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (same thing as the picture).

Am about to go get myself some balsawood / basswood. Otherwise just wondering if anyone had any good advice / tips / resources for a newbie? Keen to just get started but hoping you fine folks can give me some confidence before I dive in, cheers!

    Knives kit

Hi! I've been following the sub for a while but never actually tried my hand at woodcarving yet. Sadly a lot of the sets recommended in the FAQ & the subreddit guide are either unavailable in my country (France) or up to twice the price online (the Flexcut 11 piece set goes for around 165 dollars here...).

I was hoping someone might have some advice on some products I've found available (on Amazon so far, out of habit). For reference I'm more interested in doing small carvings & sculptures.

Kirschen has a wide variety for sale including what appears to be a sharpening stone on some, but Kupet comes in cheaper with what appears to be a strop with compound. Apart from those two the selection is filled with the usual copy & paste chinesium selection that can be found for half the price on Aliexpress.

Apart from these two the selection is rather limited and I'd probably have to go through sellers offering individual knives which is a bit of a hassle for a newbie. Any recommendations on these sets or more? Thanks and sorry if this is against some rule!

    Kids and wood

    Hey all,

My daughter has expressed interest in woodcarving. Neither of us have a clue but I promised we would learn together. Advice on where to start? Tools, books, online resources (besides reddit)or good starter projects?

    Much appreciated!
