Why go to the Dollar store and pay upwards of $1.10 for a spoon, when you can spend a Friday afternoon making your own. First spoon attempt. Pretty sure it's maple. Enjoy

    How do you sharpen these?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:06 PM PDT

A beginner question. How do I treat or preserve or sterilise my wood?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:52 AM PDT

I'm experienced enough in using knives and working with wood. And I want to put those skills to use in making something for somebody. A small hand carved pendant. And I feel confident in my ability to carve it, but I'm completely lost as to the rest of the steps necessary.

I plan to use fallen birch wood from a forest near me, and use a fire to dry or harden it. But will I need to do anything else? How do I know it's safe from rot? How do I make sure it won't crack over time, or splinter?

Ideally I'd want methods or materials I could employ myself in the wild, rather than purchasing. I like the idea of making it as naturally as possible, with only the fewest basic tools. Everything else harvested in the wild. Is that possible?

Sharpening a flexcut cutting knife (from beginner set)

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:28 PM PDT

I've tried sharpening my flexcut cutting knife on a strop with powder and then stone when that failed. I'm pretty sure I had the correct angle when sharpening, but not sure. Also, it feels like I create a burr but just on one side. Anyone have any tips or have an idea of what I'm doing wrong?
