    Fun little experiment, making separate, interlinked hoops from a single block. Umbilo wood. Next time I do this I will focus on making the hoops neater shapes, although I do rather like the 'rustic' look of this one

    About finished with my caricature cowboy. Did some wood burn lines for detail and hope to start painting tonight. Bass wood rough out to start, but I guess I deleted the before pics. I will post completed painted pics later.

    New to carving

    I've always been interested in woodworking and especially carving but stopped when I was young. Any advice for first, easy projects to build some skills? I'm hoping to make a little toy for my sons.

    And I have seen people unbox super expensive iPhones who aren't half as happy. It reminds me how humbling and rewarding wood carving can be. Time to retire, get myself a rocking chair, and whittle away!

    Long time joiner, first time carver

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 10:04 AM PDT

    Hi all,

    So after nearly 20 years as a joiner I have decided I want to turn my hand to carving. I have bought myself a Narex beginners wood carving set and watched a few YouTube videos and I am very excited to start practicing on Sunday.

    I have a few questions though;

    1, is beech a suitable timber? I have about 1.5m3 of the stuff well seasoned in my container so I'd be pretty pleased if I can use some of that.

    2, does anyone have any recommendations for a first project for me to undertake? Preferably with a video tutorial.

    Thanks in advance.

    thumb protector tips (and maybe glove, too?)

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 05:10 AM PDT

    hey guys, I'm looking for tips for a nice and comfortable thumb protector available in EU, since it turns out my feeble, soft, beginner's thumb is not yet on board with the hard work (and tools)

    any suggestions? amazon should be fine also

    Also, I've seen a lot of opinions on gloves under other posts and while I enjoy working without gloves I can see a lot of blood in my future if I keep that up, so if anyone has a link for nice snug and light, but durable glove, that would be greatly appreciated also
