Finished. People seem to like mushrooms and as I'm a fun guy, here is a triple hand carved boxwood netsuke. Have a good week. Lol.

My third wood carving but first ever post! I have just started wood carving and hoping for some insight on what people recommend for a finish. This was made from a piece of Butternut someone gave me when their tree fell down.

    Where to get wood?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:24 AM PST

Hey, all. Brand new to any sort of wood work. Saw a bunch of vids on YouTube at random (Cornelius/Jordy) and it really struck a chord. I'm starting with power carving, and bought a bunch of little gift boxes on Amazon to test / practice with.

What I'm wondering is where you go to get bigger pieces of wood. Do you just buy pre cut lumber from the like of Lowe's? Or is wood that's already precut not as desirable for one reason or another?

I don't have a garage, so I'm doing my work in a spare bedroom (which I will be purposing with a dust collector). I don't have anywhere to cut logs or large pieces of wood down to size, so I need wood that's already appx the proper size, then I can carve and trim down with the dremel as needed.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Good beginner carving set?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:37 AM PST

    Hey there,

So I hope this question doesn't get asked too much. Essentially I just wanna hear from you guys as to which carving tool set would be good for me. Preferably something I can find online, like on Amazon. What's a good-quality set that comes with the proper tools to really get into this? Thanks!
