Recent commission I did. Driftwood ocarina with a madrone mouthpiece. There are a few crushed stone inlays filling in cracks on this piece but I really like how the knot on the front turned out!

    Finding wood to carve?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 06:20 PM PST

I want to try to make a wooden hair moon or some hair sticks from. I asked my SO for help and he suggested we go collect fallen branches or something from local forests. We live in North CA so there's lots of redwoods up here. There's a beach too where we've seen lots of logs and he thinks maybe we can take a slice of wood of of those, or even cut a slice off some stumps in my parents yard. Is this a good idea for just starting out?

    Knife sharpening question

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 11:30 AM PST

Relatively new at wood carving, a few months. Was having a lot of fun with it but gave myself De Quervain's (trigger thumb) and am mostly taking a break. I think one of my mistakes was carving with dull knives so I want to get a better idea about how to keep them sharp.

One school of thought seems to be that stropping is enough, but other people have told me stropping is just a finishing touch when a knife is basically sharp already.

If stropping is not enough, I'm going to need a youtube clip or something. I bought a whetstone type of thing from the hardware store and am not at all confident I am using it right.

    Thanks!
