Relief carving of the logo for a card game box I made. Nowhere near as fine as I hoped would turn out but I’m happy with it.

    Boiling utensils for sterilisation?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:53 AM PST

Ok so I'm a bit confused because it seems a case of "depends who you ask", but does boiling carved utensils help to make them safer for eating with?

Currently I sand, wash, let dry and season (natural flax oil) and that's all I do, but I've seen some videos of people washing with soap liquid after sanding, and then boiling in (salt) water at 60⁰C for about 10 minutes, supposedly for sterilisation.

Is this worth it and what further steps can I take to make my spoons, etc properly food-safe?

Tiki man-second carve. Need suggestions and tips. What details can I add to really push him to the next level? I’m also having a hard time sanding in the smaller areas. How do I sand in those?

Can these be used for carving gloves? Just starting and I know I'll need gloves until I get used to handling the knife. These are rated ANSI A8. Is that good for carving or am I looking for whole different kind of gloves?

Will the wood affect the flavor of foods?

Hey, I have a beautiful little piece of red cedar that I want to carve into small containers for things like spices and salt. Assuming the items are sitting in there for a while, would the cedar "infuse" the spices/salts at all? I don't necessarily want them to... but I also wouldn't mind, so just curious.
