    Bamboo carving and finishing

Making a bamboo bo staff type thing for a friend. I want to carve some symbols into it ideally, but my test piece was SUPER splintery to the point where my tools that I have presently may not be up to the task.

I do have a dremel, does anyone recommend a bit that would make this easier? Or should I just paint/burn the characters on there?
