Does anyone use small card scrapers as part of their surface finish?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 09:01 AM PST

I'm trying to reduce my sanding on carvings at the moment but still want to be getting smooth surfaces especially with rounded areas. When I used to make guitars we would use a card scraper for the faces of the body to get smooth surfaces, however I'm not sure if these are only useful for flat areas. Occasionally I've found myself using one of my older knives as a rudimentary scraper, so it feels like there is potential there. Has anyone made use of card scrapers for their carvings?

    Woodgrain identification?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:44 PM PST

Is there a recommended book or website with a large catalogue of different types of woodgrain and how to identify them?

I'm just getting started and I have been given some scraps of black locust, mulberry and oak and I realized I have no idea which is which or how to identify anything that I might find.
