first time trying to carve seasoned cherry, added walnut oil and the grain really popped. Shame about the shake in the wood, didn't notice until I started on the bowl part :/

What oil/varnish to use to finish pine?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 03:34 PM PDT

Just finished making a little wooden sculpture out of some kind of wood, I'm not 100% sure what wood it is but the amazon listing said pine (here's a pic: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61UEAujhW6L._AC_SL1500_.jpg )

I'm new to wood carving so I'm thinking I need to cover it in some kind of oil to make it darker and a bit more waterproof, but I'm not sure what to use. Which kind of oil/wax/varnish or whatever should I use?

    How to get better?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Hello hobby-ists! I'm relatively new to woodcarving and am wondering what sort of tips you all have on how to get better. I'm not particularly good at any art form (drawing, painting, etc..) but have found a lot of online resources to help improve. I haven't found much for woodcarving specifically. What does practice look like for you?
