Suggestions for my three year old?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:36 PM PDT

My three year old discovered my very cheap woodcarving set (Father's Day gift from my wife a few years ago, including chisels, gouges, whittling knife, etc) and a small box of basswood for beginner woodcarvers. I have no real experience with woodcarving — the first thing I made was a ball in a cage, and I hadn't touched the tools since.

But when my son discovered it, I told him about all the tools and how they work, and he got super excited! In the past two days we've made two spoons, a whistle, and a cat. He keeps asking to carve, and I want to help him do so. Any suggestions for tools, carving media, or projects for a three year old? Doesn't have to be wood carving, but would like it to be something similar for him to start practicing and building his skills.

He's a very safe and cautious boy, and while I don't want him handling the sharpest knives, he would do well with some basic tools.

    2nd Project

Doing a few things for my kids trying to get the hang of it. This is my second project and wondered if there were any suggestions for sanding straight lines and getting more detail. I've tried diamond burs and riffler files with no real luck. maybe I'm not using them properly? Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,

    Common Block Sizes for Carving?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:50 AM PDT

    Hello.

I was hoping to find out what common sizes for wood carvings are. I bought a basswood block set from Ebay containing 2 2x2x6 blocks and 8 1x1x6 blocks. I want to make mostly animal carvings. The 1x1x6 blocks are probably too small? This seems to be a pretty standard size for wood block carving sets. What do people usually do with the one inch blocks?

I'm also curious what a "good" size to make animal carvings likes bears, birds, elephant, otter, etc would be?
