    Helping my son get started.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:04 PM PDT

I don't know if this is the right group to all this. My son wants to learn wood carving and all the articles I found say start with soap when they are younger. I have no idea where to even start with this as I don't have an artistic bone in my body. He is 9 it that helps anyone give me ideas where to start? When I googled it just basically Trace your design and cut it out. I need a little more help than that. Like what kind of soap for him to use, tools, anything so I can help him succeed. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Beginner tools needed?

Absolute beginner here, what are some tools id need to get into some simple basic carving? I've always wanted to get good at it.

Check out the knives by John Dunkle. They are a must have. Like and subscribe to Alaska woodchuck on youtube for a chance to win a sweet carving knife.

A very amateur request, but what sort of knife would be best just for whittling the end of a stick down into a point?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:25 PM PDT

Basically I have a bunch of 12 inch long skinny wooden bits of wood that need to be whittled down into a point at one end, so they can be pushed into the ground as a marker.

So far I have been whittling this with a straight edge knife I bought on Amazon for 10 dollars. It doesn't feel like the best tool for the job, and is starting to feel like it might break soon.

I'm looking to upgrade to a more suitable knife - can anyone recommend the type of knife that would be best for this job? Thanks

Hello!!! So excited to start carving.

I am so excited to get my first ever knife set tomorrow and start carving. Does anyone have any good recommendations for beginner videos? I found Doug Linker already and he seems awesome and instructive but also any sources for absolute beginners would be helpful.
