Want to start wood whittling as a hobby! Is this the same as wood working?

    Hey everyone,

For the past 2 to 3 years, I've been saying that I really want to find a hobby which involves using my hands more. Also, one which doesn't involve the internet as much! I started with collaging which has been super fascinating and then came across this idea for a hobby.

Do you think the kit below is a good starting point?

Any suggestions/advice on how to start will be appreciated. Cheers! 😁

Dumb question: can I learn from a traditional carving manual but do the projects with power tools?

Or will i be missing some essentials? I'm having trouble finding books on carving with power tools and stumbled upon some great looking ones about traditional carving.

    First timer looking for tips

My wife loves Muffler Men (old roadside attraction in the US of giant statues used to drum up business). I'd love to attempt to carve one for her for a gift. I bought basswood and wood carving tools, just looking for tips or suggestions on how to go about this. I'm fully prepared for it to suck as I've never carved a person before, but anything helps
