First attempt at carving. Quite proud of it and my girl was very appreciative

Need help identifying this wood. Found on the side of the road in the woods of the last forest in San Diego California. Seems to be very hard, maybe slightly twisted grain, I couldn't split it with my Gibson carving hatchet. The deep purple stain came out when trying to split with the hatchet.

I’m a beginner and having trouble with stop cuts-could use any advice

So I'm really having issues with just being able to make a straight cut into the wood. I'm working with basswood and using a cheap beginners kit. I thought that the knives might be dull so I tried sharpening them but still having issues. Is there a certain technique or is it possible that my knives are insufficient? Would appreciate any advice, thanks!
