Not the best photos, but I have just about finished the carving on this curly walnut bison. One piece, 30 knives and gouges, ~100 hours, two sore hands.

What would to use and where to get it?

I'm an absolute beginner to whittling, I got a woodcarving set at Christmas with a couple small blocks of plywood. I've found these blocks are too small to really make something out of them and it's really hard to carve and hold well since they are so small.

I was wondering what is the most ideal size to start carving into aswell as what type of wood. I would really like wood that is cheap and not difficult to cut into. Does anyone go out and collect there own wood or do you buy it online?

Also what are good things to whittle when starting out to grasp the basics. Sorry for so many questions but I would love to make this a hobby and make use of the free time I have in this lockdown.

Thank you, have a great day (:
