Two days dedicated to love and the Welsh lovespoon tradition. Surely that makes us the most romantic nation on earth?

Is it possible to get your chisels/gouges sharpened for you?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:16 AM PST

Hello! I'm a beginner woodcarver, I started woodcarving when I was recovering from a long-term illness and I'm running into a wee issue. I have a diamond stone, a slipstone and a strop for sharpening my tools but I can't seem to get them sharp enough, and I think it's down to not having much upper body strength, my illness left my muscles very deconditioned and there's not much I can do about it until I build them up a bit. I was looking into getting my tools sharpened but it seems like those services are for industrial tools. How likely is it that I'd be able to outsource the sharpening? Also important to note that although I'd love a bench grinder I don't have the space or the resources to invest in my own one yet.

My first carving (from Carving is Fun yt)

My first ever attempt I made a heart for my partners birthday tomorrow. Made out of kiln dried birch firewood I got a big bag for £2 so figured why not. Its a lot smoother and slippier than it looks, it kept slipping out my hand. Finished with bri wax spray.

    Set of carving tools

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 06:40 PM PST

I'd like to card some planters out of logs. Specially to plant orchids. Can anyone recommend a set of carving tools that would be good for carving in to logs?

Dust Mask suggestion with a bandsaw?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:24 AM PST

I recently got a bandsaw to expand my woodcarving/whittling. Since I won't be sawing all day, and it'll be for smaller pieces, what type of dust mask should I use? The bandsaw is in my garage and the door will be open, but the saw is used in the back corner, not the front. I mostly use basswood at this time.
