Olive wood carving, how to prep and finish?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2022 06:10 PM PST

I bought a 1.5" x 1.5" x 18" olive wood blank and I'm not sure what to do here. I heard it was a very hard wood but this piece cuts like it's a bar of really dense soap. I think it's not dried all the way and was wondering if I should give up on it if it's going to crack later?

I'd like to work with it, I'm carving not turning the piece. Is it safe to use and maybe wax when done?

    Tool Recommendations?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2022 02:56 PM PST

Looking to start my first project and was wondering what tools I need, or more specifically some good brand recommendations. I know that I need a straight knife, curved gouge, and V gouge, but is there anything else that would help a beginner?
